It was 8:00 pm on Sunday, the last day of our Fiesta, and you could still see several dozens of people wandering around the Veterans Park. As I approached, I was able to hear the screams of those who took the ride at the rollercoaster.
Upon my arrival, I couldn’t help but feeling as I was in Mexico. Mexican rock music was on the speakers and you could hear parents encouraging their kids at the shooting games saying: “apúntale, apúntale, ahora tira…. ay ay ay…” (point! Point! Now shoot… you missed!). One could feel happiness but also tiredness.
Joel Méndez is happy he had a better year than the last one at his game called “Ochute”. He is tired and he is ready to pack up overnight till next year.

“I saw more visitors this year, compared to the previous ones. More people got on the rides” He affirmed. “Go ahead, take the ride! It’s on the house!” he told me with a smile. “No thank you, I’m too old for that!” I replied and we both laughed.
A few steps forward I found another couple of smiley faces. They belonged to José Castro and his wife, they were watching their grandson having fun at one of the games. “Despite us living just a few blocks from here, this is the first time we come to Fiesta La Ballona, it’s a lot of fun for our grandson.”
Food stands were closing, and between the booths, I found another happy face. This time it belonged to Ruben Ventura, irrigation Technician to our city and responsible for the cleaning after the Fiesta.
“This has been a better year than the previous ones I can recall in my 16 years of service” he assures, as his co-worker reaffirms what Ventura said.

“People placed the trash where it belonged, as well as the recycling.” Accoring to him, this year the clean up was easier and faster because there was considerably less amount of trash on the floor. “Visitors themselves encouraged others to put the trash on the trash cans and not putting trash on the recycling containers” Ventura said.
To Ventura, Culver City is “like being in another world, away from Los Angeles. People here are different, very respectful, clean and they truly love their city.”
Ventura congratulates all Fiesta La Ballona visitors for their ecologic conciousness, cleanliness and he is sure next year will be even better.

Joel Méndez tuvo un mejor año esta edicion de Fiesta La Ballona
Eran las 8:00 pm del domingo y todavía había algunas decenas de personas en la Fiesta. Mientras me aproximaba al Veterans Park, alcancé a escuchar los gritos de quienes iban arriba de la montaña rusa.
Al llegar, no pude evitar sentirme de golpe en México. En el altavoz sonaba la canción “Amargo adiós” del grupo Inspector, que acompañara buenas memorias de mi juventud en México.
Había puestos de tiro al blanco y muchas otras suertes, se respiraba alegría y también cansancio.
Joel Méndez se muestra felíz pero también un tanto cansado. Ha estado a cargo del juego “Ochute” todo el fin de semana y ya casi es hora de cerrar Fiesta La Ballona hasta el siguiente año.
Méndez afirma que este año ha sido mejor que otros, “vi más visitantes, más gente se subió a los juegos” aseguró. “Súbete, cortesía de la casa” me dijo con una gran sonrisa. “No gracias, yo ya no estoy para esos trotes” respondí y ambos sonreímos.
Más adelante me encontré con otras dos caras sonrientes, eran José Castro y su esposa, quienes observan a su nieto divertirse en los juegos “A pesar de que vivimos muy cerca [del Veterans Park] nunca habíamos venido a la Fiesta, está muy bien para mi nieto” asegura.
Los puestos de comida estaban ya siendo desmontados, y entre las lonas me encontré con una cara sonriente más, perteneciente a don Rubén Ventura.
Ventura es el jefe de irrigación de los parques de Culver City, y en esta noche, también el responsable de la limpieza del parque.

“Ha sido un año mucho mejor que otros” indica con alegría “la gente colocó la basura en donde debía de ir, y puso el reciclaje en los contenedores adecuados, nada de basura en el reciclaje” se dirige a su compañero, quien reafirma el comentario de Ventura.
Según don Rubén, otros años, incluso el año pasado, tuvo que recoger mucha más basura del piso, pero este año fue especialmente limpio “y la misma gente, cuando veía que alguien tiraba reciclaje en la basura o al revés, le decía que eso estaba mal”.
Para Ventura, Culver City es “como estar en otro mundo, lejos de Los Angeles. La gente es muy diferente, muy respetuosa, quieren mucho a su ciudad”.
Ventura felicita a todos los visitantes de Fiesta la Ballona por su conciencia ecológica y limpieza, y está seguro que el siguiente año sera incluso más limpio.
Los botes de basura provistos por la ciudad, fueron utilizados de forma adecuada por los visitantes de Fiesta La Ballona.
Esperaremos, pues, con ansias la edición 2011 de Fiesta La Ballona.
